Florida Resident Infected with "Brain-Eating" Amoeba through Tap Water, Officials Say

Health officials in Charlotte County, Florida, have reported that a person has been infected with a rare single-celled organism called Naegleria fowleri, also known as the "brain-eating" amoeba. The amoeba destroys brain tissue and is usually fatal, with a 97% mortality rate. While the water supply in the area is still considered safe to drink, officials believe the person contracted the infection by rinsing their sinuses with tap water. The Naegleria fowleri amoeba is rare and can only infect humans through the nose. Symptoms of infection include fever, nausea, and vomiting, which can quickly progress to more severe symptoms like seizures and hallucinations. The CDC has reported a total of 31 Naegleria fowleri infections in the US between 2012 and 2021, with infections occurring when water containing the amoeba enters through the nose while swimming, diving in fresh water lakes, or cleaning sinuses with tap water. Josh Emmett defeats Calvin Kattar and demands a shot at the UFC featherweight championship

Josh Emmett strengthened his case for a shot at the UFC featherweight title on Saturday, winning a split decision over Calvin Kattar in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Austin, Texas.

Over the course of a back-and-forth five-round fight, Emmett (18-2) attacked Kattar (23-6) with winging right hands and body shots. The scorecards of all three judges were very close. Emmett, the betting underdog, was awarded the 145-pound fight 48-47 by two officials. Kattar won 48-47, according to a third.

Despite the fact that the fight was unquestionably close, with a wide range of fan scores on social media, Emmett expressed confidence in the outcome. Emmett demanded a rematch with current champion Alexander Volkanovski, who will defend his title against Max Holloway at UFC 276 on July 2 in Las Vegas.

Emmett said, "I thought I had it four [rounds] to one." "[A title shot, I believe, should come next]. No. 4 on the list was Calvin Kattar. Take a look at the people he's fought. Holloway and Volkanovski are two of the best featherweights of all time, but they are in desperate need of new blood, which I can provide."

Saturday's fight resembled a boxing match, as neither featherweight attempted to use leg kicks or takedowns. Kattar's best weapon was his jab, which he landed repeatedly throughout the battle. With the jab early in the fight, he opened a cut over Emmett's left eye, which he further opened with an elbow in the fourth round.

Emmett, of Sacramento, excelled at close range shooting. During the middle rounds, he effectively went to Kattar's body and used the overhand right to push him backward at times. The shots had visible weight behind them, even when Kattar blocked them.

Emmett picked and chose his spots in the fifth and blitzed Kattar with combinations, while Kattar tried to keep things at a distance to land his jab.

Emmett has won the last five games in a row. In the division, only Volkanovski (9) Arnold Allen (9) and Bryce Mitchell (6) have longer active win streaks.
