Florida Resident Infected with "Brain-Eating" Amoeba through Tap Water, Officials Say

Health officials in Charlotte County, Florida, have reported that a person has been infected with a rare single-celled organism called Naegleria fowleri, also known as the "brain-eating" amoeba. The amoeba destroys brain tissue and is usually fatal, with a 97% mortality rate. While the water supply in the area is still considered safe to drink, officials believe the person contracted the infection by rinsing their sinuses with tap water. The Naegleria fowleri amoeba is rare and can only infect humans through the nose. Symptoms of infection include fever, nausea, and vomiting, which can quickly progress to more severe symptoms like seizures and hallucinations. The CDC has reported a total of 31 Naegleria fowleri infections in the US between 2012 and 2021, with infections occurring when water containing the amoeba enters through the nose while swimming, diving in fresh water lakes, or cleaning sinuses with tap water. To prevent infection, officials recommend that residents only...

The FBI has arrested Ryan Kelley, the Republican candidate for governor of Michigan, in connection with the Capitol riots

LANSING, MICHIGAN —The FBI detained and raided the house of Michigan Republican gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley on Thursday, a surprising twist in one of the state's most volatile primary elections.

According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., Kelley faces multiple charges for his role in protests at the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, when supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the building in an attempt to prevent President Joe Biden's election from being certified.

The FBI executed both a search warrant and an arrest warrant at Kelley's house in Allendale Township in western Michigan, according to Bridge Michigan spokesperson Mara Schneider.

According to the video obtained by Bridge Michigan, FBI agents led Kelley into a gray SUV with them just before 9:30 a.m.

Chris Kelley, a relative and campaign treasurer for the Kelley campaign, said he was "informed" of the law police raid on Thursday morning but declined to speak further.

Kelley has denied entering the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, yet court records reveal he has been charged with a number of riot-related offenses:

knowingly entering or residing in any restricted structure or grounds without official authorization

Disruptive and disorderly behavior in a restricted building or grounds.

Engaging in any act of physical violence against a person or property with knowledge in any restricted structure or grounds

Willfully causing harm or destruction to any United States property

Kelley, a real estate salesperson, rose to attention in conservative circles in 2020 after contesting the relocation of a Confederate plaque in his city and organizing a protest against COVID-19 rules at the Michigan Capitol.

On Jan. 6, video from outside the United States Capitol showed Kelley climbing on scaffolding and urging other demonstrators.

Bridge studied footage from Jan. 6, 2021, which showed Kelley — dressed in the same clothes he wore at Michigan events — in the swarm of massive groups who pushed toward the Capitol that afternoon, despite flash bang grenades, tear gas, and the entrance of riot police.

Other videos appeared to show him urging protesters toward the Capitol and recording others as they fought with police. According to Michigan Democrats, Kelley told MLive in March 2021 that "after things began getting crazy, I left," but footage a few months later showed Kelley saying "this is war, baby" when protestors stormed the Capitol, according to MLive.

Kelley stated in 2020 that he requested that the US Department of Justice arrest Whitmer and other Democratic officials for imposing a stay-at-home order and other COVID-19 response requirements.

The raid comes just hours before a U.S. House committee probing the 2021 Capitol attacks will present its findings in a prime-time session.

Kelley is one of five Republican gubernatorial candidates left after five others were banned from the Aug. 2 ballot for presenting forged signatures on their qualifying petitions.

One of the remaining contenders, businessman Kevin Rinke, expressed his admiration for Kelley on Twitter.

"My hope is that the FBI is responding responsibly, because the timing of this situation raises severe concerns." I'm hoping for the best for him and his family, "Rinke tweeted about it.
