Florida Resident Infected with "Brain-Eating" Amoeba through Tap Water, Officials Say

Health officials in Charlotte County, Florida, have reported that a person has been infected with a rare single-celled organism called Naegleria fowleri, also known as the "brain-eating" amoeba. The amoeba destroys brain tissue and is usually fatal, with a 97% mortality rate. While the water supply in the area is still considered safe to drink, officials believe the person contracted the infection by rinsing their sinuses with tap water. The Naegleria fowleri amoeba is rare and can only infect humans through the nose. Symptoms of infection include fever, nausea, and vomiting, which can quickly progress to more severe symptoms like seizures and hallucinations. The CDC has reported a total of 31 Naegleria fowleri infections in the US between 2012 and 2021, with infections occurring when water containing the amoeba enters through the nose while swimming, diving in fresh water lakes, or cleaning sinuses with tap water. To prevent infection, officials recommend that residents only...

Green Bay allows a 17-3 lead in the second quarter to slip away

LONDON (Reuters) - The Packers played well in the first half but couldn't score offensively in the second half and let a lead slip away in a 27-22 loss to the Giants on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The loss dropped the Packers to 3-2. The Giants are now 4-1.

Green Bay led 17-3 in the second quarter on two Aaron Rodgers touchdown throws to TE Marcedes Lewis and WR Allen Lazard, and the Packers led 20-10 at halftime after K Mason Crosby converted a 48-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.

However, the Giants used methodical scoring drives in the second half to score 17 consecutive points to take a 27-20 lead, and the Packers' final chance died inside the New York 10-yard line. With just over a minute left and facing third-and-2 from the 7, Rodgers had back-to-back passes swatted away at the line of scrimmage to turn the ball over on downs.

The Giants ran as much time as they could before taking safety out of punt formation, and the Packers couldn't get the Hail Mary off because Rodgers' arm was struck while attempting to toss it.

Rodgers finished 25-of-39 for 222 yards, two touchdowns, and a 96.3 passer rating. WR Randall Cobb had seven catches for 99 yards, and Lazard had four catches for 35 yards and a touchdown. RB Aaron Jones carried the ball 13 times for 63 yards, and RB AJ Dillon carried the ball six times for 34 yards.

QB Daniel Jones led the Giants with 21-of-27 passing for 217 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 100.2 passer rating. He also possessed RB. Saquon Barkley finished with 13 carries for 70 yards and the game-winning score in the fourth quarter. He also had three receptions for 36 yards. Darius Slayton led the Giants in receiving with six catches for 79 yards.

Here's a rundown of everything that happened:

After the first quarter, the Packers lead the Giants 10-3

The Giants won the coin toss and chose to defer. Christian Watson, a rookie receiver, returned the first kickoff for 18 yards.

Faced with a third-and-8, quarterback Aaron Rodgers gained time in the pocket before launching a 35-yard bomb down the middle to Randall Cobb.

Green Bay advanced into New York territory thanks to three 14-yard runs by AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones. Mason Crosby's 46-yard field goal with 11 minutes and 5 seconds remaining in the first quarter gave the Packers a 3-0 lead.

The Packers' defense forced a three-and-out after Kenny Clark tackled Saquon Barkley on first and second downs, and then assisted in putting pressure on Daniels Jones following his incomplete screen pass intended for Barkley.

For the Packers' second offensive series, Yosh Nijman took over as left tackle. Green Bay and New York both went three-and-out, with the Giants losing seven yards on their second possession due to a delay of game penalty and a two-yard screen to Barkley for a loss.

The offensive line gave Rodgers plenty of time on the next offensive series, allowing the reigning MVP to start the drive with a 22-yard pass to Romeo Doubs.

Green Bay got a first-and-goal at the New York 4 after tight end Robert Tonyan drew a 33-yard defensive pass interference call on Xavier McKinney.

With 3:19 left in the first quarter, Rodgers threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Allen Lazard, increasing the Packers' lead to 10-0.

Jones got the Giants' first down with a 26-yard pass to Darius Slayton. Graham Gano's 48-yard field goal put New York on the board after a 12-yard throw to Marcus Johnson.

At halftime, the Packers lead the Giants 20-10

The second quarter opened with an 8-yard pass to Aaron Jones for a first down and a 12-yard pass to tight end Josiah Deguara.

Green Bay kept the chains moving with rushes by Jones and Dillon, as well as a 5-yard jet motion pitch to Watson. After an 8-yard draw out of the shotgun by Jones, the Packers converted on third-and-5 at the New York 19.

Cobb gained nine yards to the Giants' 2 after Doubs' block on a receiver screen. Rodgers faked a handoff and found a wide-open Marcedes Lewis in the end zone for the 2-yard touchdown, extending Green Bay's lead to 17-3 with 7:25 left in the half.

Rudy Ford tackled Gary Brightwell at the Giants' 14 after he caught Mason Crosby's one-hop kickoff. After gaining only 14 yards on his first five rushes, Barkley broke a 40-yard run before being brought down in the middle by Adrian Amos and Eric Stokes.

Preston Smith sacked Jones for four yards, but the Giants kept the game alive with a 15-yard pass to Richie Jones on third-and-3. On third-and-9, New York converted another third-and-long with a 9-yard pass to Slayton.

With 1:15 left in the first half, New York scored for the first touchdown on a reverse to Daniel Bellinger, cutting the Packers' advantage to 17-10.

With all three timeouts remaining, the Packers took over at their own 25. On the first down, Jones gained 11 yards. Green Bay called its first timeout following an eight-yard out to Cobb. Rodgers used the second timeout after converting the first down with a 6-yard pass to Tonyan.

Cobb gained 22 yards on a pass across the middle to the New York 29 with 43 seconds remaining. As time expired, Green Bay led 20-10 at halftime because of Crosby's 48-yard field goal.

After three quarters, the Packers lead the Giants 20-13

Rashan Gary got the second half underway with a sack, but it was negated by a defensive holding call on Darnell Savage. On third-and-3, Slaton converted another third down for the Giants with a 13-yard catch to midfield.

Jones gained six yards on third-and-4 with his feet on the next third down. Preston Smith sacked Barkley on first down at the Green Bay 24, and Gary sacked Jones on a third-and-8 draw to set up Gano's 37-yard field goal.

To begin the next series, Rodgers launched a 17-yard play-action slant to Lazard. Dillon's 11-yard run and a defensive illegal contact call brought the Packers to midfield.

Matt LaFleur, the head coach, successfully disputed a Cobb catch that was previously ruled an incompletion. Cobb was ruled to have caught the ball and dragged his toe for a 14-yard completion after further review.

The drive subsequently came to a halt when Rodgers was sacked on third-and-8 by Dexter Lawrence. After a 33-yard punt by Pat O'Donnell, the Giants began their next series at their 9-yard line. It was O'Donnell's 12th punt inside the 20-yard line in 19 attempts this season.

Watson also suffered a hamstring injury and is questionable to return.

On a first-down pass in the flat, De'Vondre Campbell sacked Barkley for a 1-yard loss. The third quarter finished with the first-down access to Bellinger of 8 yards.

The Giants defeat the Packers, 27-22

The Giants were down to Green Bay 14 after Daniel Jones' 16-yard pass to Johnson. Jones connected with David Sills on a play-action pass for five yards on third-and-3 from the Packers' 7.

With 10:08 remaining in the regular season, Brightwell sprinted in for the 2-yard touchdown to knot the score at 20. The Packers went three-and-out after three consecutive incomplete passes.

Barkley returned to the game after momentarily leaving due to a shoulder injury, catching a 40-yard pass to the Green Bay 20. A 2-yard direct snap to Barkley out of a Wildcat formation gave the Giants a 27-20 lead.

Before Tonyan converted the first down with a 14-yard catch from the flat, Jones gained six yards on second down. Cobb gained a first down after catching his seventh throw of the contest for nine yards, giving the seasoned receiver his most receptions in a game since he had eight with Houston against Green Bay in 2020.

For conversion on third-and-2 to the New York 27, Rodgers sneaked a 9-yard ball to Lazard above the coverage. At the two-minute warning, Rodgers connected with Tonyan to get a first down at the New York 15-yard line.

Jones gained two yards on the second down and six on the first down thanks to a draw up the middle. Two incomplete passes later, the Packers turned the ball over on downs.

With 11 seconds left, the Giants took a safety in their end zone after three kneeling attempts. Amari Rodgers brought the free kick back 18 yards, to the Giants' 41, but due to a false start, it was returned to the 36. On the very last play, Rodgers was taken down.
