Florida Resident Infected with "Brain-Eating" Amoeba through Tap Water, Officials Say

Health officials in Charlotte County, Florida, have reported that a person has been infected with a rare single-celled organism called Naegleria fowleri, also known as the "brain-eating" amoeba. The amoeba destroys brain tissue and is usually fatal, with a 97% mortality rate. While the water supply in the area is still considered safe to drink, officials believe the person contracted the infection by rinsing their sinuses with tap water. The Naegleria fowleri amoeba is rare and can only infect humans through the nose. Symptoms of infection include fever, nausea, and vomiting, which can quickly progress to more severe symptoms like seizures and hallucinations. Southeast Wisconsin reported numerous tornadoes; at least 21,000 were without power

In the late morning and early afternoon of Wednesday, a line of rapidly moving severe thunderstorms brought tornado warnings, high winds, and hail to southeast Wisconsin and the Milwaukee metro area.

Milwaukee County was under a tornado warning from the National Weather Service until 12:45 p.m.

The weather service said in a statement that at least three tornadoes had been confirmed by its Doppler radar in the area.

The weather service reported that tornado-producing storms were in a line running from close to Oak Creek to close to Yorkville to Spring Grove at 12:37 p.m. and were moving east at 45 mph.

The weather service also mentioned "a radar-confirmed tornado just west of Franksville" in that statement.

At least 21,000 of We Energies' customers were reported to be without power across its service area as of 1 p.m.

Elsewhere, The weather service reported that tornado-producing storms were nearly stationary at 12:26 p.m. along a line connecting Bayside to Wind Lake.

"Radar confirmed tornado near Brown Deer, Greenfield, and West Allis," the weather service reported.

Further, the weather service reported that "at 12:15 p.m., tornado-producing storms were located along a line extending from near Big Bend to near Waterford to near Walworth, moving east at 50 mph."

Radar confirmed tornadoes were being reported "near New Berlin, Burlington, and Lake Geneva," according to the weather service.

At 12:09 p.m., tornado-capable severe thunderstorms were moving 35 mph northeast along a line from Menomonee Falls to Mukwonago, according to a statement from the weather service.

Additionally, Ozaukee, northwest Waukesha County, northeastern Jefferson County, Rock, Walworth, and Kenosha counties have received tornado warnings from the weather service.

For the counties of Milwaukee, Washington, Ozaukee, and Sheboygan, severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect.

Severe thunderstorms were moving 55 mph eastward at 12:02 p.m. along a line from close to Germantown to close to East Troy.

The weather service reported that a tornado-capable severe thunderstorm was 7 miles west of Okauchee Lake, near Lac La Belle, and moving east at 35 mph.

Additionally, a tornado warning has been issued until 12:15 p.m. for parts of Kenosha county, Walworth county, and Rock county.

According to a statement from the weather service, a tornado-capable severe thunderstorm was moving southeast at 40 mph at 11:46 a.m. near Whitewater.

Meanwhile, at 11:52 a.m., tornado-capable severe thunderstorms were moving 45 mph east along a line from close to Lisbon to close to Palmyra.
