Florida Resident Infected with "Brain-Eating" Amoeba through Tap Water, Officials Say

Health officials in Charlotte County, Florida, have reported that a person has been infected with a rare single-celled organism called Naegleria fowleri, also known as the "brain-eating" amoeba. The amoeba destroys brain tissue and is usually fatal, with a 97% mortality rate. While the water supply in the area is still considered safe to drink, officials believe the person contracted the infection by rinsing their sinuses with tap water. The Naegleria fowleri amoeba is rare and can only infect humans through the nose. Symptoms of infection include fever, nausea, and vomiting, which can quickly progress to more severe symptoms like seizures and hallucinations. The CDC has reported a total of 31 Naegleria fowleri infections in the US between 2012 and 2021, with infections occurring when water containing the amoeba enters through the nose while swimming, diving in fresh water lakes, or cleaning sinuses with tap water. To prevent infection, officials recommend that residents only...

Scientists have listed the products that eliminate bad breath

Researchers at Sichuan University found that probiotic foods help fight bad breath. The scientists' work was published in the journal BMJ Open.

Volatile sulfur compounds are the main cause of persistent bad breath and occur when bacteria living on the surface of the tongue break down proteins too quickly and create an excess of volatile sulfur compounds.

A meta-analysis of seven studies found that probiotic bacteria in fermented foods such as yogurt, sourdough bread, and kombucha help fight bad breath.

Bacteria that help fight bad breath include Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus reuteri, Streptococcus salivarius, and Weissella cibaria.

“Probiotics can inhibit the breakdown of amino acids and proteins by anaerobic bacteria in the mouth, thereby limiting the formation of unpleasant byproducts.

"Probiotics help in the short term, but do not significantly affect the causes of bad breath, such as plaque and plaque on the tongue," the researchers note.

According to scientists, people should constantly eat products with probiotics to keep their breath fresh. In the future, scientists will conduct their studies to verify the results.
