Florida Resident Infected with "Brain-Eating" Amoeba through Tap Water, Officials Say

Health officials in Charlotte County, Florida, have reported that a person has been infected with a rare single-celled organism called Naegleria fowleri, also known as the "brain-eating" amoeba. The amoeba destroys brain tissue and is usually fatal, with a 97% mortality rate. While the water supply in the area is still considered safe to drink, officials believe the person contracted the infection by rinsing their sinuses with tap water. The Naegleria fowleri amoeba is rare and can only infect humans through the nose. Southwest Airlines leaves Thousands Stranded

Southwest Airlines leaves Thousands Stranded

Till the following year, many Southwest Airlines passengers are stranded. With nearly 4,000 flights canceled on Monday, the nightmare for Dallas-based Southwest Airlines and its passengers continues.

On Monday, Southwest Airlines canceled 71% of its flights, leaving travelers stranded all over the country. Southwest's flight scheduling system is effective, but cancellations can have a cascading effect that can occasionally become catastrophic, according to Mark Duebner, the recently retired Love Field Aviation Director.

The federal government is now promising to look into the mess of canceled flights across the nation, according to Chris Sadeghi with our media partner WFAA. The grim news was recently delivered to passengers at Houston's Hobby Airport: the earliest they can rebook a flight is December 31.

The thousands of flight cancellations are also leading to the discovery of another problem. In addition to thousands of Southwest Airlines customers being stranded over the holidays, unclaimed luggage is also arriving at airports. Depending on the airline, if a passenger's luggage is missing between the five and fourteen-day window, they are advised to file a missing bag claim.
