CNN — After scoring 26 points in the Los Angeles Lakers 112-111 victories over the Indiana Pacers, LeBron James is now just 63 points away from Kareem Abdul-all-time Jabbar's NBA scoring record.
While teammate Anthony Davis scored a game-high 31 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, the 38-year-old also grabbed seven rebounds and seven assists.
James told reporters, "I just understood my game was needed more on the interior tonight. I felt like we were attacking, especially in the fourth quarter. We needed to get some rebounds and make some baskets.
The Lakers, who are currently in 12th place, have now won two straight games as they attempt to reclaim a playoff spot in the crowded Western Conference.
Abdul-record-setting Jabbar's 38,387 points, which he had when the former Lakers center retired 36 years ago, has now been surpassed by James' 38,325.
According to ESPN, James said, "I think it's one of the greatest records in sports in general." "I believe it ranks right up there with baseball's home run record.
It's one of those records you just don't think would be broken or ever see, but then you see guys like... Hank Aaron held it for a very long time, so when players like Sammy [Sosa], Mark McGwire, and those guys started to climb it, people exclaimed, "Oh man. This is a real possibility.
"And once you focus on it and pay attention to it, you see Sammy and Mark McGwire step up to the plate and you think, 'They have a chance to win every time.'" Fun was had. As a sports fan, I found it entertaining to watch those guys take the field and chase the ball.
James made a crucial three-pointer down the stretch to give his team the lead with just over two and a half minutes left as the Lakers trailed by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter.
On the day he learned he wouldn't be an All-Star in 2023, Davis put in another strong performance. Many fans found this decision controversial given how well the center has played this season when he's been healthy.
While the Pacers' slide down the Eastern Conference standings continues after their fourth straight loss, they were encouraged by Tyrese Haliburton's return on Thursday after missing several weeks due to injury.
The NBA's scoring record will be up for grabs again when James takes on the Pelicans on Saturday. Despite managing an ankle injury all season, the 19-time All-Star is now more likely to surpass Abdul-Jabbar on Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Thunder or next Thursday against the Milwaukee Bucks.
